The Man Who Came To Dinner

Set and Lighting Design by Jon Ares.

Fall 2000.

Directed by Jim Peerenboom. Set and Lighting Design by Jon Ares.

The stage at Lincoln is very narrow (about 28 feet at the proscenium) so it’s always a challenge to fit all the doors of a comedy like this into that space. Even though we had a small space, we still wanted it to look like a jewel — a green jewel, in this case.

My big ‘bugaboo’ is “attention to detail.” I get so anal about making sure that ALL the moulding is installed, and that all the cornice pieces meet at the corners. (Our cornice is styrofoam.) The window wall stage left opened during intermission to allow the Christmas tree to roll in. Outside that window was a very faint snowscape. Not detailed, but just enough to let people know it’s out there.
